Under the white-hot light of his intensive interrogation during the recent LA Creation Entertainment Tri-Con, Jeffrey Berman, Executive Producer/Writer of the upcoming web series, Naught for Hire, said that the first draft of the upcoming four-issue comic series - story boards and outline - are complete and in the hands of co-writer Ben Browder who is currently reviewing these preliminary documents and providing his notes so that they and John E. Stith can begin writing the first draft of the first issue.
Jeffrey also stated, while struggling to extricate himself from the hot seat, that his goal is to hire celebrity illustrators from the comics world to create the four (or possibly more) collectible covers. A publisher and printer of the series has not yet been decided, but much research has been done to ensure that these comics will be keepers.
Ben Browder has permitted his likeness to be used for Nick Naught in the comic, and that after an intensive search, a terrific artist has been lined up for the drawing and inking of the interior pages. After an additional pronounced prodding, Jeffrey went on to say that the comic is planned to have a retro look and they are testing a black and white noir look with splashes of color to accentuate the action in the frames.
The story takes place ten years before the action of the web series, and explores the origins of Nick Naught as a P.I. Even under the extreme duress we caused him, Jeffrey would not provide more details about the story, saying that telling more would be considered "spoilers."
The comic is scheduled to be out in time for Comic Con in July 2012.
On September 17, 2011, John E. Stith, creator of Nick Naught (Naught for Hire), was the guest at the Denver Area Science Fiction Association (DASFA) at the Broadway Book Mall in Denver, CO. The DASFA has been meeting monthly since 1974.
John read the prologue and excerpts from several scenes from his novelette All for Naught to a group of about 20 people then opened the floor to questions. He mentioned that comments on religion had been edited from the current edition of All for Naught. The characters in the world of Naught were named after John's friends and acquaintances and this is the only time he ever did such a thing. The last name Naught came from a friend whose last name is McNaught.
The candle flames keeping the future of Naught for Hire alight seem sometimes to burn brightly and other times to flicker and gutter, but they never go out. It takes a long time to raise sponsorships and financing for quality productions such as what we'll see with Naught.Fan support is crucial and thankfully ours is unwavering under the guidance of Naught Stuff who holds his candles high to illuminate genre activities. The production staff of Naught for Hire remains very grateful for the efforts of the fans. Activities on The Agency website and Facebook make the wait for word of production go-ahead less frustrating. Just remember, as one producer/writer has said; getting a script or series produced is such a miracle that each time it happens another angel gets his/her wings. Well, Naught for Hire inches its way towards the goal of being green lit without the benefit of Charlie or George, but it does have Paramount.
So here is a mini-interview with Jeffrey instigated by a follower on Facebook. Not only was this on Facebook, but it also appeared on the BenBrowder.Info website before we had a chance to post it. Is this competition?
The Agency recently grilled Naught for Hire producer Jeffrey Berman with some tough questions; because we’re the tough guys, see! While he is very excited to talk about the project, which he admitted when we shone the hot, bright light directly on him, there are some secrets he feels are best kept under wraps for now. As he, John E. Stith and Ben Browder mentioned at various times, Naught for Hire is in development with Paramount Digital and progress is being made to bring Naught to the public eye. Even with the combination of secrets and contractual obligations, Mr. Berman was still able to answer some questions that have been posed by fans to Naught P.I. Agency and Naught Stuff on Facebook. The Agency added a few of its own.
Naught P.I. Agency: What does ‘in development’ mean in general and what does it mean specifically for Naught for Hire right now?
Jeffrey Berman: Development covers a wide range of pre-production that can range from writing a script to casting a project to finding the funds to produce it and everything in between right up until the project receives a green light and you actually enter the production phase.
Naught, obviously, has a completed script for the entire series and most of the cast is in place. What we are still working on is securing the funds to shoot the project. Since we’re aiming for a web telecast, the funding process is not traditional and as this is still new territory it’s taking longer than we had hoped.
Here's some news of Naught of which you've been waiting:
Part of the confusion might be because of the 'punny' nature of the teases. But things are happening behind the scenes and here are some facts we got during a discussion last night with Naught for Hire Executive Producer Jeffrey Berman.
Detailed facts are out there you think you might have heard already; believe him, you have Naught.
